We talk a lot on this blog about how to tackle team building the right way. But, there’s plenty that most businesses get wrong when it comes to team building. There are many misconceptions about team building – trust falls and sending a hula hoop around the circle simply do not build great teams. Rather than going over some of the best practices in team building (which we’ve already covered extensively on this blog) we’ll be taking a look at some of the biggest mistakes companies make during their team building programs so that your business can avoid them!

Avoid the Cliché

As was alluded to earlier, trust falls and hula hoops don’t make great teams. What we really mean is that these types of activities do not build or reinforce the skills that build great teams. Traits like communication or team cohesion only improve through activities that stimulate critical thinking. Cliché team building activities like taking the office bowling or going for a company happy hour, although can boost team morale, are often the least effective forms of team building.

When picking a team building activity, think about activities that require critical thinking, problem solving, and communication. When employees improve these skills, they are strengthening the traits that comprise a good team.

Don’t Overpay

Another large mistake that businesses often make with team building is grossly overpaying for an ineffective event. Team building is expensive, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Companies that prefer more extravagant events may be spending upwards of $100 per person on a team building event. However, it’s possible to conduct a very successful, fun, and effective team building event for as little as $30-40 per person, sometimes even less!

The main costs of any team building activity will typically be:

  • Cost of activity/supplies
  • Food/catering
  • Venue costs

It may be difficult to cut costs directly on the activity or supplies needed (without changing the entire activity itself) but saving money on food and venue costs can easily be done! Don’t overpay on your team building program!

Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

As much as it is a cliché, and as much as we just told you to avoid them: practice makes perfect.

This old adage holds true, especially for team building. Team building requires practice, and practice requires repetition. Team building should be a regular part of your office life. This does not mean that your company needs to host full-fledged team building activities every week, or even every month. However, it does mean that your office needs to do the small things. The daily face-to-face meetings with your team, weekly icebreakers or quick fun activities to solidify comfortable relationships, meetings and discussions about company culture: these are all important parts of the team building regimen, just as much as a fully planned team building day.

Have a Purpose

Every team building activity should have a purpose, no matter how big or small. Many businesses go into team building activities with no clear goal or purpose which causes the activity to feel misguided and ineffective. Discussing the goal of each team-focused activity can place everyone on the same page and minimize confusion while maximizing team cohesion.
